Michigan Thursday: Recruiting Updates

Big Weekend for the Big House, lights, camera's and football for the first time.

Here is some notes from the recruiting world:
  • With TRich not taking visits and sticking with Michigan, the thought was that maybe Michigan was going to back off Yuri Wright.  Nope, they still want him in this class for sure.

  • Danny O'Brien's recruitment continues to look positive for Michigan.  I think he still wants to take visits but the "pull" of the Big House at night might convince him to be a Wolverine.  He will be in Ann Arbor on Saturday night.

  • Jordan Payton the former USC commit will be in Ann Arbor for his official this weekend.  He is down to Michigan and CAL.   The word on the street is Michigan should have WR commit in the next week or so.

  • Not coming this weekend is WR Powe and OL Garnett.  Both want to reschedule and it seems Garnett is going to take visits after the season.  Both are on the West Coast and hard to travel across country with a game on Friday.

  • There continues to be rumors that Bri'onte Dunn's verbal to Ohio is a "soft one".  He is 50/50 that he will be in A2 on Saturday night.

  • Amara Darboh's legal guardian wasn't real excited about Brian Kelly's rage last weekend: “I know how emotional it gets out there,” [Dan Schafer, the guardian] said. “I understand that’s part of the game. I really do. But it did shock me. You hold Notre Dame up a little higher than that. It made me wonder how I would feel if Amara was treated like that on national TV.”

  • Wow it continues to look good for a match between 5 star center Mitch McGary and Michigan Basketball.  I still don't want to think about it, because the awesomeness of M2 coming to A2 would be mind blowing.

  • Current verbal Eric Magnuson will be in town on Saturday.

  • There should be plenty of 2013 guys and current instate commits under the lights as well.

Michigan Friday: Hopes They Look Better at Night

Michigan has some "Night" News

Michigan will play Northwestern at 7:00 CDT on the BTN in October.  The game is at Northwestern.

The older news is that Michigan and ND will wear "throw backs" jerseys for the first night game at the Big House.  Per the Freep, here are possible mock ups.

I'm not so sure about these.  Maybe they will look better on Roy Roundtree at night?  Right now, I think these shirts should be worn at night but as pajamas. :)

  • David Molk is on the Rimington Award Watch List.
  • RIP Tractor a story on how emotional his service was.
  • The Michigan Regents approve the schematic designs of the new Crisler Arena.  Check out the photos here, it looks really cool!
  • Seems 2012 CB Armani Reeves has a top 2 of Michigan and Penn State.

Michigan Tuesday: Says to Hold on To Your Wallet

Just for the record: the NFL can't figure out a way to pay it's employees out of a $9 Billion pool, Jim Tressel "forgot" about his players selling it's gear and got fined $250,000, UConn went to a BCS Bowl and ended up losing close to $1.8 Million and now Michigan is looking for a few extra dollars of your money.

With the new Glick Field House, the new score boards, the new basketball practice facility, the Crisler Arena renovation, the new field turf, the new luxury seating, RR's contract buyout and the nicer bathrooms at the Big House you knew the Michigan Football Program would come for your money soon rather then later.

That announcement happened on Monday, when Michigan announced that ticket prices were going up.   Season tickets are going up about 12% and individual tickets for "regular games" are going up $15 to $70 a ticket.  The "premium tickets" for the good games are now $85.

I am a little torn on this news.  On one hand, Michigan has made a lot of improvements to the Big House and (soon) Crisler Arena.  On the other, the Michigan economy is still struggling and to raise prices for the masses seems difficult to take when giving up your season tickets pretty much means you will never get them back (due to the waiting list).   I know it would never be "spun" this way but I hope this doesn't have anything to do with RR's buy out.   Michigan spent a ton of money on that guy and got little to no results.

Recruiting News

Michigan is still looking for it's first verbal commit for the 2012 class and it seems two prospects with Michigan offers are picking other schools.

  • Taylor Decker a 6'8 offensive guard picked ND over the weekend.  Taylor had a Michigan offer.
  • Dan Voltz one of the top offensive line prospects in the Midwest is expected to announce his decision for Northwestern today.
  • Vince Biegel a LB from Wisconsin visited A2 this past weekend.  He is visiting BYU soon as well.  The word on Vince is that his dad played at BYU and is probably a Wisconsin lean.   He wants to make an early decision and unless U of M can get him back on campus for a practice, Michigan seems to be playing catch up in his recruitment.
  • Allan Gant from outside of Toledo visited Ann Arbor last week and didn't come away with an offer.  Allan's dad played for Bo at Michigan.

Michigan Monday: The People vs RR as Michigan's Head Coach

Welcome to the Big House Court Room.  Today we will hear the case for or against keeping Rich Rodriguez as Michigan's head coach.  Over seeing today's court room will be the semi-honorable Judge Big House Bob.  (BHB)

BHB:  Welcome to today's proceedings, I will hear both sides and then make my judgement.  The case against Mr. Rodriguez will be levied by Traditional Michigan Fan (TMF) and Mr. Rodriguez will be represented by his attorney. (ARR)

BHB:  Let's start out with the defense, ARR you have the floor.

TMF:  Objection your honor!  Michigan hasn't had a defense all year.

BHB:  Even though that is funny, one more outburst like that will get you thrown out of here! ARR please proceed.

ARR: Thank you, Today I would like to state my case on why Michigan should keep Rich Rodriguez as head coach for at least another year.    Rich came to Ann Arbor 3 years ago and inherited a team where all the offensive skill players went to the NFL and the back up QB already had a foot out the door to Arkansas.   This team had no quarterbacks and lacked serious depth on the defensive side of the ball.  It needed to be re-built from the ground up.

Yes, the team has struggled but it has showed improvement over his 3 years as this program re-builds itself.   Each year Michigan has continued to win more games and this year has qualified for a Bowl Game.   The wins have gone from 3 to 5 and now to 7 wins.  I was told there would be no math, but from my calculations that is 2 more wins every year.     I know TMF will argue that Jim Harbaugh should come to Michigan to replace my client.  With that in mind, I enclose document #1 to the court which includes Mr. Harbaugh's record at Stanford.

Year 1: 4-8
Year 2: 5-7
Year 3: 8-5
Year 4: 11-1

I ask the court, how is his record any different then my clients?  In fact, if Michigan wins it's bowl game it will have the same record as Mr. Harbaugh in year 2 and 3.   Shouldn't RR be given the 4th year to see if he can make a similar jump?

Yes, the Michigan defense has struggled while RR has been running the Michigan program.  He has admittedly made two poor decisions for defensive coordinator and plans to make a change in that position in 2011.  My clients expertise lies on the offensive side of the ball and Michigan currently has a top 10 offense and Heisman Trophy candidate under center for the next 2 seasons.  Nobody can argue that Michigan has made big leaps on that side of the ball.

My final point is; how long does Michigan want to struggle?  A new coach will bring in a new system and need more time to make changes.  Players will leave and there will be more losses.  Do we really want to do that again? Do you really want to pay my client $4M to leave?  Bill Davidson has unfortunately passed away and while he was alive seemed to be a fan of Mr. Rodriguez.  So even if he was still with us, I don't think he would write a $4M check for Mr. Rodriguez to leave.    I think a program like Colorado would be very interested in a Mr. Rodriguez if he became available as they head into the PAC 12.

In summary, Mr. Rodriguez is on track to re-build this program back to elite status.  His record is similar to Mr. Harbaugh's and just needs a couple more years to really show the progress everyone expects.   Michigan has built depth on offense and needs more time to build it on defense.   He also is building a strong recruiting class this year and every year he has been here.   Not to forget the strides he has made with the Strength and Conditioning program at Michigan as well.   There are too many things going in the right direction to stop the train at this point.   Go Blue!

BHB:  Thank you ARR.  TMF the floor is yours.

TMF:  Thank you.  That was a compelling argument by what I will call "No" defense.  I think that plan would work if Michigan was in the Big East, but we play in the Big Ten.  Where the power run game is king.  Look at the 3 teams that spilt the title this year.  Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Michigan State all use the power run game.  Northwestern has run the "spread" for years and only plays well once every 5 years or so.  Is that what we want?  No way!

RR has made 2 huge mistakes with his defensive coordinators and now it looks like they will be looking for a third.  The Michigan football program is under probation for the first time in history, which happened under RR's watch.  He clearly has not been recruiting Michigan Men with some players not able to enroll each year due to not making it academically.  He broke Michigan's long standing bowl streak and this will be the first year Michigan has gone bowling in his 3 years.

I could over look those things if this Michigan program had preformed well against our rivals.  Michigan is 0-3 to Michigan State and 0-3 against Ohio State under RR.  That is un-believable.  RR has only had limited success against Notre Dame.  His Big Ten record is 6-18 and his overall record is 15-21 at Michigan.  He is the highest paid Michigan Football coach ever and has one of the worst records ever.   Is this a good value, I ask you?  He must go and must go now.   It's time to welcome a new head coach and I believe Michigan Man Jim Harbaugh is the man for the job.

Thank you.

BHB:  You both have made compelling arguments, I will take it under advisement and give you my verdict in a few minutes.

8 to 10 minutes go bye

BHB:  I know we live in a day and age where the coaches get the most blame.  Look at that fella that coached Minnesota's NFL team.  He was one pass away from the Super Bowl last year and now finds himself out of a job.   It's just the world we live in.   Coaches are hired to be fired. With that said, I would like to take you all down memory lane for a moment.

Jim Harbaugh is not stupid.  He sees the state the defense is in  and he also knows that there is a decent probability that skill players like Devin Gardner and Denard Robinson might transfer if he took over as head coach.  He also knows the time frame it takes to re-build a program like Michigan's because he has been living it at Stanford for the last 4 years.  What makes you think he wants this job?  If your remember he threw Michigan under the bus a few years ago and has a DUI on his record.   My point here is not to discount Harbaugh as coach or a person but to point out that he is not the perfect candidate.

Those that are calling for Harbaugh also seem to be the ones that wanted Les Miles 3 years ago.  As we now see, Les isn't an ideal candidate either due to his unique clock management techniques and his wiliness to over sign players and then cut them while they check into their dorm room.   Even with a good record this year, I believe LSU fans wouldn't mind if he found another gig.

What if Harbaugh doesn't want to come to Ann Arbor, then what?  Brady Hoke?  He has done a good job at San Diego State and Ball State but that isn't exactly the Big Ten is it?  Remember the last Michigan head coaching search and what a mess it was?  Brady was seen as a plan C or D candidate.   Is that the right strategy?

If you remember way back,  Bo was very upset at Illinois when they fired Gary Moeller after 3 years.  He was admit that it took longer then 3 years to turn around a program.

Yes, this program has seen some rough water over the past 3+ seasons.  Don't forget that in Carr's last year things weren't exactly great with losses to App. State and Oregon at home and fielding teams that were considered "slow" in comparison to other programs.  This downturn was something that would have happened no matter who the coach was.  It just has happened.  We all expected 7-5 this year and now we want to throw the "baby out with the bath water"?

I am ruling in favor of Rich Rodriguez staying another year, seeing Denard has a Junior, seeing if Dee Hart can give the RB position some stability, and seeing if a healthy defense with a year's experience can be better.  I sure don't have $4M to fire him, do you?

We are adjourned!   Coach Rod continue with recruiting and Bowl preparations.

Side note:  RR's buyout goes from $4M to $2.5M on 1/1/11

Michigan - Michigan State Preview

Time: 3:30
Location: Big House
TV: ESPN/ABC
Line:  Michigan - 4.5
Weather:  75 and Sunny

This is the annual in-state battle with a number of story lines between two ranked un-defeated teams and clearly the best Big Ten game of the day.    Michigan State has a good defense and Michigan has a strong offense.   MSU gives up 18.6 points a game with ranks #36 in the nation while Michigan's offense ranks #9 in the country with a 41 point average per game.  Vice versa is where it gets a bit ugly:  Michigan's defense is ranked #72 in the country in "points against" while State's Offense ranks 24th in scoring 31 points per game.

So who has the advantage?  Let's go to a more detailed Tale of the Tape:

Michigan Offensive Line vs MSU D Line = Michigan

Michigan Running Game vs MSU Defense = Michigan

Michigan Passing Game with Denard vs MSU DB's = Michigan

State's Running Game vs Michigan LB's = State

State's Passing Game vs Michigan's DB = State

Special Teams = State

Intangibles = Michigan (home and 2 loses in a row)

Michigan has the advantage on both lines.  MSU has had trouble getting any pass rush this year and has an inexperienced offensive line.  This is a game where the announcer will say for the past 100 years the team with the most yards on the ground has won the game.   Michigan State will try to run the ball about 70% of the time, they want to keep Michigan's explosive offense off the field with long drives.   When they do pass look for a lot of balls thrown to the running backs and tight ends.  There is going to be a lot of pressure on Michigan's linebacker unit and players like Thomas Gordon and Jordan Kovacs.

Michigan on defense will need to stop the run and put as much pressure on Cousins as possible.  This is State's first road game of the year and The "New" Big House crowd will be loud and juiced up for the late afternoon start.

Both teams beat ND and the MSU defense gave up 367 yards passing to to Dayne Crist but just 95 yards on the ground.   Michigan will try to be more balanced with a strong run game.  Wisconsin was able to run for 165 yards last week.

Sing Hail to the Victors if....................
  • If Denard is effective through the Air and Ground
  • Mike Shaw can break some nice runs and can compliment "Shoelace"
  • The Michigan D slows MSU's running game
  • We see some 4 man fronts on defense
  • Michigan's senior LB's put this game on thier back and make a statement
  • Cousins gets rattled and starts throwing it to the men in the Blue sweaters.

Burn all your green clothes if...................
  • Michigan LB's look lost and out of place most of the game
  • Greg Jones is stopping Denard
  • MSU's talented WR's aren't in the same zip code as Michigan's DB's
  • Michigan's doesn't have a pass rush and Cousins is picking apart the Michigan secondary

This is another game that everyone is saying "take the over".  It seems both offenses will score and score often.  MSU will try to wear down the Michigan D with long drives by pounding the ball and short passes.  Look for Michigan to bring creative ways to get pressure besides Mike Martin with the use of true freshman Jibreel Black out of Cincinnati at DE.

Michigan has plenty to play for with an instate rival in town.  6 wins get them bowl eligible for the first time under RR, they have lost 2 years in a row to State, and this could be win #2 over the 3 rivals on Michigan's schedule this year.  I think Michigan will come out with guns a blazing and we will see some new things/plays we haven't seen yet this year.  If Michigan wins the turnover battle, I think they win with some cushion.  I expect to hear one of the loudest Big House's ever.  Don't sell MSU's first road game short, they might struggle early when they realize this isn't Ford Field.  This game has a bit of a UConn feel with many of the national media predicting a close Spartan win.  Michigan 38 MSU 28

GO BLUE!

Michigan Tuesday: Dee Hart Update and Other News & Notes

Dee Hart Update: "I feel I can come in and play right now in that offense with Denard, then it will be 'pick your poison,’ ” Hart said. (Freep link).  Dee is planning an official visit to Auburn this weekend for the Clemson game and visit to Alabama for the Florida game in October.  Dee still contends that Michigan is his leader but those trips scare me a little bit.  Add this from Rivals:  "I watched it yesterday and all I know is Denard [Robinson] got off and ran that thing," Hart commented.

"A decision is coming pretty soon," Hart said. "I'm going next week to see Auburn-Clemson. Most likely that will be an official, but I don't know yet. I'll get out to Alabama probably for the Alabama-Florida game [Oct. 2]."  "I'd say Michigan is out front," Hart said.

  • For the weird file:  Steven Threet gets to play Wisconsin again this weekend.  What's weird about it, is the last time Threet played Wisconsin he was playing for Michigan and upsetting the ranked Badgers at Michigan Stadium.  Some of you still might remember that 10 minute run Steven had down the sideline to help win the game that day.  This weekend Threet will quarterback the Arizona State Sun Devils in Madison on Saturday.  Ironically, Wisconsin is highly ranked again coming in at #12.  Steve threw for 392 yards against Northern Arizona last Saturday.  This will be the Sun Devils first real test of the year.

  • An update on Sam McGuffie:  I wish him well but he seems to be struggling again this year at running back for Rice.  In two games he has 28 attempts for 65 yards which is a 2.32 average per rush.  He does have a catch for a touchdown and has caught 5 passes for 84 yards.

  • For those that think Saturday is going to be a cake walk, think again:  UMass is ranked #16 in the FCS Poll.  "We're excited to go out there and represent UMass,'' Minutemen coach Kevin Morris said. "We're facing a storied program, and we know that, but we're going out there to win. We're putting everything on the table, like we always do.''

  • Light Up the Big House! The regents will vote on Thursday to add permanent lights to Michigan Stadium.  The cost will be $1.8M and the athletic department will cover the cost for the project.  Michigan will host ND next year for the first night game at the Big House and there will be a hockey game in the Big House this winter.

  • With the recent attrition, Michigan can sign up to 20 players right now for the 2011 class.  This might add a spot for another RB (other then Dee Hart of course) and maybe another WR.

  • Michigan recruit Kris Frost will make an official visit to North Carolina this weekend.  He is still planning a Michigan official for the Michigan State game.

  • Anthony Lalota did not make the trip to ND this past weekend.  Another sign he wasn't putting in the work during practice to get playing time.  It seems the offense line might be a better fit for this young man.

  • Denard's historic run went for 87 yards against ND.  Michigan lost Ron Kramer on Saturday who wore #87.  I'm just saying!  (HT: Mgoblog)

Michigan Monday: Recruiting Buzz

A common theme with 2011 recruits is; they want to see how Michigan does on the field this year.  Many recruits are concerned that there could be a coaching change at Michigan if they don't play well on the field.

Saturday went a long way in proving that Michigan is moving in the right direction.  Did they move forward with some key recruits?  That still maybe in question but Saturday sure didn't hurt.

TomVH from Mgoblog gives us some recruiting updates from visitors this weekend.
  • Dee Hart:  This weekend came and went without a verbal commitment from Dee. Many had predicted/expected that he might make it official this weekend.  That didn't happen, which is a minor loss for the Wolverines.  Dee did enjoy his visit and still has Michigan #1 but I'm guessing he still wants to take a couple more official visits before he commits.  He is expected to graduate early and be on campus in January, so he needs to make a decision fairly soon.

  • Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix is Dee's teammate and friend with Ricardo Miller.  He also happens to be the #1 safety prospect in the nation.  He made it to Michigan this weekend but "insiders" still believe he is still solid with Alabama.  Getting him to visit Ann Arbor was huge (wish it was warmer) and Ricardo will continue to be in his ear.  I think Michigan has an outside chance but I still expect him to stay with Bama.

  • Anthony Zettel was again on campus and had a good time.  He continues to have Michigan high on his list and will make a decision after his season.   This recruitment makes me nervous and I think the Michigan "negative" recruiting is starting to get to him.  He is one of those guys that is really watching Michigan's season and if Michigan wins he probably will be Blue.

  • Avery Walls was again in Ann Arbor for his 3rd visit.  He was another guy on commitment watch but that didn't happen.  For me Avery falls into a similar situation as Dee Hart.  I think he wants to take a couple of visits and has an official to Oregon and CAL set up in October.  I still believe Michigan leads.

  • AJ Jordan:  AJ plays in Trotwood, Ohio the same program that gave Michigan current starters Roy Roundtree and Michael Shaw.   AJ was high on the Wolverines early but his recruitment has been quiet since this spring.   Which has given other teams a chance to recruit the 6'2 WR.   I got to believe that Michigan only having one more WR spot in this class will help AJ make a quicker decision but it also could be a negative, since Michigan has a lot of depth at his position.

Other Michigan news:
  • Denard wins the Rivals National Player of The Week Award.   Congrats Shoelace!
  • I will have an update after RR's morning press conference on injuries and other team news.
