...Miss Teen Wanganui Pagent
A 15 year old girl in New Zealand, Olivia O’Neil, won Miss Teen Wanganui and all was good. But as soon as pictures of her surfaced with her new hair color, brunette, she was harassed, not by friends or family, but by pageant officials. One official in particular, Barbara Osborne, wrote on her Facebook page, "Is that a wig? I hope it is, don’t give me heart failure." Olivia was blonde at the time she won the pageant, but like most 15 year olds she decided to try something new, nothing wrong with that in my eyes, and these eyes are pretty conservative. Olivia told Osborne that she had dyed her hair and that maybe pageant life was not for her. Then Osborne told her that someone would be there to take her place and that they would have better manners, she also added that Olivia would not go far in this world...major. Apparently Olivia had had enough of Barbra Osborne and gave back the crown. She said that the constant remarks about weight, make up, etc. eventually got to her. Pageant spokesman Jevan Goulter stated that Olivia gave up the crown and that they never told her to give it up. But he also added that this whole thing did start over the hair dying. Apparently they expect you to keep the same look that you have at the time you win the crown. You could infer that pageants do prefer blondes, and that this is just pushing the case for stereotyping those girls and women. You could also say that maybe Olivia did have an attitude, but she is 15... In the end I will say that I do not think that she should have given up her crown or have been put in that position to either change her hair color or give up her crown, which really was the case if you think about it. The rule about keeping your same look is not written but implied, but I guess it will now be written. I think this whole thing was a bad move on the pageant's part because it is just not going to make them look good in any way possible. I am going to give the Miss Teen Wanganui Pageant and its officials a Digit Down.
